Objective To study the long-term clinical effects of thenano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide-66(n-HA/PA66) composite materialartificial vertebral lamina on preventiong the scar formation in the spinalcanal, and reconstructing vertebral canal posterior structure.Methods From January2003to December2005,12patients weretreated with the n-HA/PA66composite material artificial vertebral lamina.There were8males and4females,aging from41to73years with an averageof56years.Reconstruction segments:one case in L2,three cases in L3,fourcases in L4,two cases in L5, and two cases in both L4and L5.10cases ofvertebral laminae were reconstructed by1artificial vertebral lamina and2cases by2.To study the effects by JOA score respectively before operation,3months after operation, and the final follow-up, which included subjectivesymptom, clinical sign, daily activities restricted conditions and bladderfunction. And the changes of vertebral canal sagittal diameter also weremeasured through imaging examination.Results All patients were followed up prospectively for7to9years. The JOA score were respectively12.36±3.20、25.09±2.07、27.73±0.65before operation,3months after operation, and the final follow-up. Themean sagittal diameter of narrow segment wasrespectively(13.7±0.9)mm,(33.9±1.8)mm before operation and the finalfollow-up. Through statistics processing,there was significant differentcomparing JOA scoring and vertebral canal sagittal diameter beforeoperation and after operation.The CT examination of last follow-up showedthe vertebral canal have no stenosis and collapse,the rebuilt vertebrallaminae have fused well. The fixation have no failure. MRI showed littlescar formation and adhesion in the lumbar spinal canal.10cases obtainexcellent results,2good by JOA score standards.Conclusion The n-HA/PA66composite material artificial vertebrallamina can effectively prevent the compression to the nerve root and duralsac from the scar and restore the vertebral laminae.
