Instant messaging tools to support online collaborative learning activities

With the constant deepening of education reform, the rise of life-long educational thought and the arrival of the learning society, learning to work with others is not only the development skill for the people to survive, but also an important symbol of modern people. In particular, a variety of instant messaging tools have emerged. They have not only brought convenience for communication but aslo brought enormous opportunities for the people to expand their knowledge and to promote the construction of the learning society. However, whether in the study of educational applications, or in the study of online collaborative learning activities design, there are less empirical analysis of typical cases and effective methods of teaching design. In order to solve these problems, this study is proposed.The study is carried out from the theory and practice. In theory, using the literature review method, the author summarizes the educational characteristics of instant messaging tools, defines related notion, and designs the basic framework and templates for QOCL. In practice, using the action research method and questionnaire survey and interview method, the author examines the present situation, proposes the design project, and puts it into practice and takes effects test.Through two rounds of action research, the author draws the following conclusions:QOCL plays a positive role in promoting the all-round development of learners, the perfection and transcendence of learning organizations and the course development; unlike the formal instructional design, the activity design of QOCL has its unique characteristics; therefore, the designer is suggested to use a suitable design method,to analyze the specific activity situations and take the scientific activity design. In this way, the online collaboration could be lasting and well-regulated, the learning activity could be copious and effective.The characteristic of the entire research is as follow:illustrating the connotation of QQ-like online collaborative learning; finding the common problems by examining the present situation; designing the basic framework and introducing the actual operation method of each key step and construction points for attention in detail.
