|Keywords||middle school students perceptual learning style English learningachievements|
In recent years, with the appearance of individual teaching and the focus ofeducation gradually transferring from the "teaching" to "learning", the researchershave begun to concern individual differences of learners. Learning style, as a keyfactor that influences individual differences, has caught much more attention from theresearchers. Lots of studies have emphasized the learners’ learning style preferences athome and abroad. However, most researchers studied the foreign language learningstyle preferences of university students and adults SLA in china. This paper aims toinvestigate the characteristics of perceptual learning style preferences of Chinesemiddle school students and find out the relationships between perceptual learning stylepreferences and these variables: gender, education environment and English learningachievements.Based on the previous researches, a study on perceptual learning style preferencesof255students from two different kinds of middle schools is carried out by adoptingReid’s perceptual learning style preference questionnaire, English learningachievements and interview. In this study, the author intends to answer the followingtwo questions:1. Is there relationship between perceptual learning style preferencesand education environment among the students from two different kinds of middleschools?2. Is there relationship between the middle school students’ perceptuallearning style preferences and their English learning achievements? In order to answer the questions above, the study has obtained the followingresults through quantitative and qualitative researches:1. The findings in this study reveal that middle school students have different ways oflearning. Generally speaking, Chinese middle school students prefer all the sixperceptual learning styles, including visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tactile, group andindividual learning style. They show strongest preference for tactile and auditorylearning styles. And they prefer visual learning style least.2. The obvious correlation is found between education environment and group learningstyle and individual learning style.3. There are no significant gender differences in perceptual learning style preferences. In the study, girls show stronger preference for tactile learning style than boys, while boys prefer visual learning style more strongly than girls.4. There is relationship between perceptual learning style preferences and the Englishlearning achievements. High achievers appear to have multiple learning stylepreferences, especially prefer tactile learning style and auditory learning style more.Through the study, the author reaches some pedagogical implications for teachingand learning. As for teachers, we should learn about and respect the learning styles ofour students and use more teaching strategies to suit students’ learning styles andmaximize students’ English learning achievements. Meanwhile, we should enrich thelearning styles of the students and guide the students to learn by themselves in variousstyles.
