Appadurai is one of the most influential thinkers of globalization incontemporary America. With the coming of ideological trend of globalization and the“plateau” of the postcolonial studies, scholars all around the world have studied thecauses, effects and results of globalization from the politic and economy perspective.In Appadurai’s opinion, it could not give us a general comprehensive of crack aboutglobalization, because of this, he proposed a theoretical to understand globalizationwith the method of anthropology research. He proposed a distinctive vision ofglobalization from a cultural perspective, and put global culture divided into pieces,including ethnos-capes, media-scapes and techno-scapes, mieda-scapes, icescapes.Today, the five dimensions about modernity develop in their own ways in the world.Appadurai’s theory of globalization, including the future of patriotism and localproduction changes. Through criticism on nation primordialism, Appadurai points outthat the multiculturalism based electronic media but not the national emotion is thedriving force of the modern ethnic movement. Multinational companies on behalf ofthe World Organization weaken the legitimacy of the nation-state in socialmanagement and social control. Patriotism has come to an end, and it replaced by apost-national form. Appadurai uses two specific cases including Cricket whichdeveloped in India and numeral’s functions in the period of colonial British to showus the post-colonial characteristics of global cultural exchange.Media developmentand population migration makes local production no longer construct in a closed andstable ceremony, and local production’s plan and achievement becomes moreunpredictable. It remains to be seen that Appadurai’s a positive attitude toGlobalization, but many organization groups such as transnational corporations andAmnesty International is much stronger than nation states in mange internationalaffairs, so, Appadurai’s theory of cultural globalization theoretical value and practicalsignificance.
