The social survey was created in modern society. It based on social reality rather than analysis on other scholar’s data, and collect data by means of field survey. For social problems and issues in some districts, the survey will help people to find reasonable way to solve these issues. The social survey activity produced was closely related to the social background. It was industrial times. In the United States, it has to go back to the end of ninth century and the early twentieth century. In this period, the United States entered the industrial age. There is a great development in social and economic aspects. However, it is the age that the social contradictions are prominent. In this reformation that made the progressive movement nationwide, which before that only going on some states and cities. The social survey also provided foundation and motivation for reform.The Pittsburgh Survey was the one of the typical activities in social survey history. Pittsburgh was an important district and it attracted a lot of people to work here. These people came from around the world and they came here to make a living. At the same time, Pittsburgh was concentration area about social issues; this is the reason why the social investigators pay attention to this place. The survey point is the residents in Pittsburgh that their working and living condition. Pittsburgh Survey shows that the social scientist had turned their activities from library to the realistic society. They also explored new survey method which had an important impact on the world.More important thing is the influence and impact about this survey. American people saw the suffering and misery behind the economic prosperity through the survey. It stimulated their sense of social responsibility and encouragement to participate in social reform. Across the United States, groups for social reform in all areas, established one after another. During the social investigation in some areas, they carried on their own, more and more, they confirmed themselves in devoting to the social reform and step by step, they found the way out. Their efforts whether in literature or in action, are painted on a splendid touch in Progressive Movement in the United States.
