Graphical user interface is the product which combined the technology of computer, Graphical information, Visual thinking, human-computer interaction, while icons is an important part of interface. We can see icons everywhere, they are simple but not monotonous, can be seen everywhere. It’s not Overstated for us to regard them as the soul of interface. Icons show people a kind of visual perception which is strong and fine, and they also had a major influence on the information process of human society. With the equipments such as computer and telephone exert more and more great influence in people’s daily life, icon design become more and more important.Since the graphic interface and electronic equipment technology booming, the diversification of interactive interface mode make the icons of applications become more and more diversiform. First there are planar icons, static icons and plane icons; Then, we have three-dimensional icons and three-dimensional realistic icons; And now, there are dynamic and audio-visual icons. People continually pursue the aesthetics, fashion and interest, so the updated visual style of icons are widely different.The essay are divided into5chapters:The first chapter defined the icon; The second chapter analysed the design element which including component element and visual element; The third chapter analysed their application on different interfaces; The forth chapter is about the further practice; Finally, the author explored the development tendency of icons. The five chapters studied the icons systematically step by step, with a view to better reflect visual arts, to make the icons more artistic, innovative, symbolic and civilized, to give better service to graphical user interface, and to meet the functional and aesthetic needs of graphical user interface.
