An excellent gigabit smart ethernet switch is designed in this paper. It supportsSSRAM as its embedded shared structure, remote network management, trunk protectionin GE ports, STP spanning tree protocol, broadcast storm suppression, quality of servicepriority management, and etc. Switch function in second layer is provided by it, and all thetests of it have been passed, and it operates stably and reliably.Firstly, the present development status and development trend of the ethernet switchtechnology is researched in this paper. And then, relevant technology and principle ofethernet switch is researched. Based on the theory research, the system design of theintelligent switch is proposed, including PCB design, switch network design, and storagenetwork design. And then, detailed design of switch network and storage network isresearched. Finally, system test is analyzed, and relevant troubleshooting is given in thispaper.Through the research and design of the switch with shared structure, conclusions ofthis paper are given below. In the high-speed digital circuit design, signal integrity,consisting mainly of reflection and crosstalk, is an important part in the system design.Switching network with shared structure has the advantages of full use of cache resourcesand the best delay, and to switch chip with embedded shared structure, concentrated cacheis good for the chip’s layout and wire routing. To SDRAM access design, timingconstraints can improve throughput, and different data access mode can be selectedaccording to different design requirements.There are mainly two innovations in this paper. Firstly, this switch is designed for bigcustomers to access to packet transport network, supporting trunk protection of the two GEports, and switch of all the optical ports. Secondly, an improved algorithm of saving thememory and avoiding the code errors is designed in the storage network.
