This thesis is a tentative investigation of the humorous language in Chinese situation comedy from the perspective of discourse analysis based on the ’incongruity’ theory in cognitive linguistics with the purpose of giving some hints to the improvements of the Chinese situation comedy production as well as the audience’s appreciation. The data is from one of the most popular situation comedies recently in China- Home with kids.Home with Kids which presents the conflicts and changes of the views on education of children with the Chinese cultural background, ways of thinking and ways of behaving is an excellent work in Chinese situation comedy market. The author of this thesis collects 95 sample dialogues with humorous effects from the first ten episodes of this sitcom as the qualitative data of analysis. The data are observed, compared and analyzed following the principles of qualitative research, from which patterns, that is, humor generation strategies in this situation comedy can be studied based on the theory of cohesion, Speech Act theory, principles of conversation and the context of discourse, are discovered. To construct the theoretical basis for the whole research, firstly, the author gives a general introduction of the theories concerned: ’incongruity’ which explains the cognitive mechanism of humor; the theory of cohesion introduces formal devices that build texture; the Speech Act Theory and principles of conversation study discourse as social act and interaction; the context of discourse, including situational context and cultural context, stresses contextual aspects of meaning which are negotiated by the social relations and identities of participants in communication. The data are analyzed from four aspects: cohesion and humor, speech acts and humor, conversational principles and humor and context of discourse and humor. Finally, all the major findings are listed and a quantitative research is done to figure out the ratios of the embodiments of each of the theories mentioned above in the production of humor in situation comedies. Through all the attempts, the author thinks discourse analysis has an interpretative power to count for the humor phenomenon in Chinese situation comedies. Thus, the study from this perspective can be further carried out.
