Numerical Simulation and Contrastive Analysis of Labyrinth Seals and Leaf Seals

Vapor seal is an indispensable and important component in steam turbine for economic and safe operation. The performance of seal has a significant impact on the performance of turbine. The optimum design of seals could improve the efficiency of turbines effectively. Now the Labyrin gland which is widely used in turbin has some obvious disadvantages, it needs big space to install and the blow-by is huge. To get rid of these disadvantages, scientists invented a new gland system which is called Leaf Sealing. This kind of gland system has a special characteristic: when the turbin is inactive, the leaves and the rotor are touched, but when the turbin is running, they are detached. This kind of working could avoid abration of the gland and heighten the efficiency of airproofing.The operation principle and the calculation method were introduced in this paper. Flow field in the labyrinth seals and the leaf seals were studied with the help of numerical calculation by using the CFX software. The value of the labyrinth seal and the leaf seal leakage were calculated. Based on the results, the flow regulars in the labyrinth seals and the leaf seals were analyzed. It validated the result that the leaf seals performed batter than the labyrinth seals. It could provide some theoretical footing and technical support for optimizing the design of leaf seals.
