The Top Drive Drilling System which was come in 1980s is a major technological breakthrough of rotary drilling. It has been paid a high attention by petroleum companies all over the world and got a fast development and application in international oil industry. The application of top drive which is on advanced equipment’s behalf in oil drilling has markedly improved the speed and efficiency of drilling operation. As the rapid development of national economy, the consumption of oil is growing fast. However, the increase of petroleum production is lower than consumption, so the top drive will get a good deal of market opportunities. Though the design and manufacture of top drive at home has introduced the foreign advanced technology, the quality and performance of domestic top drive still has more or less problems. Therefore, the design and research of the whole top drive has an important practical significance for shortening the distance from abroad, improving the technology content and enhancing the character of top drive.In this paper, it analyzes the research status of the top drive at home and abroad and points out the development tendency of the top drive from now on, introduces the basic structure and the advantage of top drive,and analyzes the drilling operation in depth and detail. Taking the TDS-11SA top drive of Varco Company in America for example, the paper has a detailed design for balanced system, braking, rotary head, tipping device, IBOP, back clamp and locating pin oil-ways of top drive’s hydraulic system. According to the main technical parameters of TDS-11SA top drive, the paper has a reasonable calculation and selection for the prime hydraulic components on the basis of considering such factors as the usability and the service life of the key components.The paper has introduced the senior modeling and simulation software AMESim which is famous in engineering system all over the world. According to the design for the oil-way of balanced system in chapter 3, the paper has built the model with the use of HCD library of AMESim and set the relevant parameters of each part of the model in detail through the parametric model. At last, the paper runs the simulation and has a deep and detailed analysis for the simulation result.The simulation result indicates that the design for the balanced system oil-way of top drive hydraulic system has achieved the objective of balancing the weight of top drive and making sure the screw thread would not be abraded when making up and breaking out. Then, it proves that the design is dependable. The simulation result shows that the work efficiency and usability of balanced system could be improved by adjusting the relevant parameter of accumulator. The simulation result also proves the accumulator plays a part in absorbing pressure pulsation and moderating impact in the hydraulic system.
