Studies on High Performance Water-based Acrylate Damping Coating

Acrylate damping coating has been prepared by blending acrylate emulsion with different kinds of hindered phenol:AO-80, AO-60 and Irganox-1035 in this paper. The results show that AO-80 and AO-60 have improved damping performance at higher temperature but reduced damping performance at lower temperature immensely; Irganox-1035 has improved damping performance at higher temperature and not influenced damping performance at lower temperature. Therefore, Irganox-1035 is selected as the damping additive of acrylate coating.To investigate the damping mechanism of the coating, polyacrylate/Irganox-1035 hybrids has been prepared by blending. The results show by adding Irganox-1035, the maximum value of tan8 peak is remarkably increased up to 4.2, demonstrating PAE/Irganox-1035 hybrids are promising damping materials. Irganox-1035 in the hybrids is in amorphous form, which has excellent viscoelastic property (tanδ=20.8) and improved the damping property of the miscible hybrid system.Acrylate damping coating which consist the PAE as the matrix and hollow glass beads as the main filler has also been prepared. DMA results show that adding unmodified hollow glass beads could not improve the intensity and temperature range of loss peak; adding KH-550 modified hollow glass beads (KH-550/Hollow glass beads=100/0.5) could improve the intensity of loss peak from 0.56 to 0.73. With the increase of KH-550 content, the damping properties of the coating is first increased and then declined.
