Freeway video monitoring points are mainly distributed in the toll stations, tunnels, and alongside the freeway. Most of video monitoring points are distributed scatteredly with long distance except those fixed in the toll stations. At the present stage, the primary transmission modes in freeway video transmission system include analog optical transceiver and IP OVER SDH. The former has the advantages of transmission stability, high real-time property and so on, but it has fatal faults of low integration, scalability, optical fiber resources wasting and others. The latter has defects in the transmission bandwidth and utilization. In regard to this, it is necessary to design a set of powerful freeway video monitoring network according to its characteristics.To meet the requirement of video monitoring and management, we designs a set of freeway video monitoring communication system with the characteristics of the EPON technology and gigabit Ethernet network based on the research on RRPP video transmission network scheme selection, video access system model design with EPON , video monitoring digital standard selection, and so on. According to the practical demands of the Guang-Wu freeway, a set of communication network suitable for freeway video monitoring is finally designed and implemented from the aspects of video coding, front video transmission, video access, and video monitoring system functions.In the process of practice, the author takes part in the technology discussion and scheme selection, and finishes the full project design and provides the technical on-site guidance. Finally, this freeway video monitoring system can implement the image collection, transmission and display stably, and fully meet the client’s requirements. The system has the advantage of digitization, intelligence, simple structure and high resource utilization rates, can reduce the operation and management cost. This system provides references for the design and construction of video monitoring system in other freeways, and gives guidance and instruction to the development of freeway video monitor technology.
