With the technology and development of communication, compression and processor technology, the portable media player integrated with video audio playing and entertainment must be the direction of the PMP in the future. The purpose of this thesis is to build portable media player which can be used to play the common format audio and video files based on ARM7.Firstly, the structure of the portable media player is analyzed, and the workflow of the hardware is also given. As the aspect of processor, we choose the EM8510 as hardware platform and uClinux as software platform after compared different operating system. And the application is programmed with the object orientation mode in the uClinux operating system.Secondly, according to the processor, the embedded Linux is built. The operating procession and codes analyzing of startup codes and link script are given in detail.Thirdly, the graphical user interface is designed according to the physical demand. The decoded video signal is not only can display in screen, but also can be directly connected to monitors, TV sets and projectors. The audio decoder is by software, and the video decoder is by hardware. Besides, it improves the FAT file system corresponding to the specialty of the media application, and it has improved on the efficiency of read/write to flash card.The finished player has a very friendly graphical user interface. It gets media files through a USB2.0 interface from PC to its 20GB 1.8 inches mini hard disk. It has many video and audio outputs. Besides, it has integrated the function of IR, touch planet and entertainment. It will be have widely market outlook.
