OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is a parallel transmission scheme of MCM (Multi-Carriers Modulation). It transmits information through orthogonal multiple sub-carriers and has high utilization of frequency spectrum, good capability of countering multi-path interference. It is also adaptive to high-rate data transmission and multimedia data transmission. This technology has been regarded as the core technology of 4G wireless communications system in the future. One of the major drawbacks of OFDM system is that the OFDM signal of the transmitter can have high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which limits OFDM’s wide applications. This paper has mainly researched on the methods of PAPR reduction for OFDM and has obtained some results by MATLAB simulations.This paper first introduces the principle of OFDM system and its key techniques, gives out mathematical definition of PAPR and depicts regularities of distribution regularities of distribution for statistic characteristics, analyzes the reason of high PAPR and its influences for the system. Then it introduces the methods of PAPR reduction, including clipping method, coding method and probability method. Here we mainly study the probability method, including the typical arithmetic like selective mapping (SLM), partial transmit sequence (PTS), and compare them in the aspects of reducing PAPR capability and system complexity. Due to the high complexity of PTS method, this paper introduces three methods to reduce the complexity and puts forward a united arithmetic on the base of dual layered PTS and adaptive PTS. According to the simulation, this new method is proved to reach the PAPR capability as the dual layered PTS but with much lower complexity.In the end, we make a thorough summarization of the efforts in this paper and expect the further practically research in future.
