Recent years, with the fast development of virtual reality technology and its more and more wide application, all kinds of universities have developed virtual campus ramble system based on virtual reality technology. As an important part of digital campus, virtual campus can not only provide ramble among campus but also achieve complex interaction, even can directly control the database at the background and provide function of database searches, meanwhile, virtual campus plays an important role in campus programming and long-distance education.In the article, the scheme of VRML in conjunction with Java was adopted and a virtual campus ramble system was developed based on the search of related virtual reality technology, it helped realized real time ramble and potion of interaction function in campus. After analysis on the requirement of virtual reality technology in campus, a collective design was established, and all kinds’objects in campus were modeled with 3DS Max and VRML. To solve the conflict between picture quality in virtual scene and real time system operation, it was put forward improvement plan of virtual reality ramble system via scene optimization and file compression, etc. Interaction technology in virtual campus was studied, and interaction was achieved in the scene with two kinds of interface between Java language and VRML.The testing of the systems proves that the system is featured with real time effectiveness, interaction, and good visual effect. Users can review campus and can do some simple interaction during the review.
