The Analysis on Technical Efficiency of Chinese Pig Production

Pig farming has always been Chinese traditional industry and pork has long been regarded as necessities of living by Chinese people, which makes China become the largest pork producer, and pork production increased year by year. However, there is a serious problem of China’s pig breeding industry that the production level is relatively low and the resources are seriously wasted. This not only makes the lack of stability and market adaptation of China’s pig production which leads to large swing in output and prices, threatening the daily consumption needs of the residents, but also affects the income levels of farmers, as well as pig farming in China’s international competitiveness. Undoubtedly raise productivity of China’s pig breeding industry is imminent. Therefore, the studies of China’s live pig production efficiency of existing technology level and its influencing factors have important practical significance.This study, which uses parameter method of SFA and is based on the status of breeding pigs in China, researches technical efficiencies and their impact factors for China’s existing four kinds of breeding model, as backyard, small-scale, medium and large-scale models. With a view to summarize of the reasons for the differences of technical efficiency among four breeding models and the main factors that impacts the technical efficiency. Finally, it is expected to provide scientific basis for the future direction of development and the formulation of national policies of China’s pig breeding industry.Studies have shown that:(1) the average technical efficiency of China’s pig production is 89.07% and there is a significant loss of technical efficiency. The gap of technical efficiency between the backyard and the scale breeding is obvious, the average technical efficiency of scale breeding is around 6% higher than the backyard, while the difference between the small, medium and large-scale breeding is not obvious. From different provinces under different levels of technical efficiency, for those with less technical efficiency and natural resource, scale farming can bring a more pronounced increase in technical efficiency, but every province’s technical efficiency of the scale breeding model is higher than that of backyard breeding. (2)Feed is the most important influential effect of the pig production, however, the output elasticity of the feed under backyard, small-scale and medium-scale breeding models become lower year by year, while the output elasticity of feed of the large-scale which has high level of feed use has been high all the time. There is an obvious phenomenon of excessive labor input of backyard mode and its output elasticity is negative, while the output elasticity of labor of the small-scale, medium and large-scale breeding modes are small, volume maintained at a moderate level. (3)The ROY of pork, the local income levels in countryside and the proportion of concentrate feed accounting for total feed both have a positive impact on technical efficiency, from the conditions of different scales, the ROY of pork has a positive effect on backyard and small-scale technical modes’ efficiency, and the effect on medium and large-scale modes are not obvious, the local income levels in countryside has positive impact to backyard mode and has no effect on other modes, the proportion of concentrate feed accounting for total feed has a very significant positive effects on the modes of backyard, small-scale and medium-scale, while no significant effect on large-scale one.Finally, based on the summary of study conclusions, the writer put forward relevant policy recommendations in order to provide theoretical basis for the determination of the development direction of China’s pig breeding industry and the improvement of technical efficiency of China’s pig breeding industry.
