Synthesis of Nano-sized Metal Oxides and Application in Flexible PVC Flame Retardant

Nano-sized zinc ferrite, zinc aluminate, magnesium aluminate and magnesium aluminate/zinc aluminate composite metal oxides powder were prepared by a co-precipitation route, and the structure of the prepared samples was characterized through X-ray diffractometer、SEM. The flame retardant of the flexible PVC treated with composite metal oxides was studied by oxygen index (OI) and differential thermal analysis; The mechanical properties of flexible PVC was determined through tensile strength. Experiment results show that :1) The particle size of the prepared zinc ferrite is about 5 nm~10 nm. The OI of the flexible PVC added with 2.5% mass zinc ferrite increased from 25.4% to 29.7%, which to the demand of normal flame retardant for flexible PVC; The thermal degradation performance of the above flexible PVC sample is improved obviously, The final amount of residual carbon increased from11.22% to 20.69%; The appropriate added amount of zinc ferrite can improve the tensile strength and toughness of flexible PVC.2) The particle size of the prepared zinc aluminate is about 10 nm~20 nm. The OI of the Flexible PVC added with 3.0% mass zinc aluminate incresased from 25.4% to 29.8%; The thermal degradation performance of the above flexible PVC sample is improved obviously, The final amount of residual carbon increased from 11.22% to 19.55%; The flexible PVC added with 3.0% mass zinc aluminate improved the tensile strength and toughness obviously.3) The particle size of the prepared magnesium aluminate is about 10 nm~20 nm. Flexible PVC added 3.0% mass magnesium aluminate shows that the OI advanced from 25.4% to 29.6%, which indicates the flame retardant conform to the demand of flame retardant for flexible PVC; The thermal degradation performance of flexible PVC added 3.0% mass magnesium aluminate is improved obviously, The final amount of residual carbon increased from 11.22% to 17.33%; The flexible PVC added with 3.0% mass magnesium aluminate improved the tensile strength and toughness obviously.4) magnesium aluminate/zinc aluminate prepared by the method of co-precipitation, crystallite diameter about 10 nm~20 nm. Flexible PVC added 3.0% mass zinc magnesium aluminate shows that the OI advanced from 25.4% to 29.8%; The thermal degradation performance of flexible PVC added 3.0% mass zinc magnesium aluminate is improved obviously, The final amount of residual carbon increased from 11.22% to 17.36%; The flexible PVC added with 3.0% mass magnesium aluminate/zinc aluminate improved the tensile strength and toughness obviously.
