Since the inception of the first electronic computer, the rapid development of computer technology have been widely used in all walks of life. With the rapid development of computer hardware and software technology, Virtual reality technology becomes an Emerging Science. By computer simulation, it provide users with a true 3D environment; Combined with various sensors, it provide some real sense. With the rapid development of computer graphics , computer networks and sensor technology, the VR technology become more and more sophisticated, the applications based on VR are used more and more widely.Similarly, the virtual reality technology has penetrated into the mapping and GIS industry: Digital City, three-dimensional landscape, the virtual roaming system and the rebuild and analysis about varieties of dynamic geological model. Virtual Reality prospects in the mapping and GIS industry are bright .In this thesis, based on a systematic study of the basic theory about virtual reality and three-dimensional model, combined with its development and status at domestic and foreign, using mapping and GIS technology, computer graphics, virtual reality simulation technology, 3D modeling and OpenGL technology , according to the actual operation of Total Station, on simulating operation system about total-station based on VR technology in all functional modules of the more detailed design, and introduce the process of DEM data and the model creation, program architecture and its key segment of the implementation method: using ArcGIS generated DEM file from elevation data; using AutoCAD drawn into a geometric model and the output stored in 3DS format; use OpenGL called external DEM and 3DS files to reproduce the entire three-dimensional field of view environment; through human-computer interaction methods to operate on the system elements, which greatly improves the system’s interactivity. This system use Visual C ++ 6.0 for the software development platform, using MFC call to OpenGL library functions, complete system development.Combined with Specific topics, based on the study of theory and key technologies about virtual reality and simulation technology, this paper developed Simulating Operation System About Total-station Based On VR Technology. The system will be gradually improved in the future study, and apply to classroom teaching of surveying and mapping.
