With the development of the national economy, the self-cultivation of the general public for arts has been advanced obviously, and the relations between arts and the social economy become closer. To meet the demand of talents of arts departments by the society, many higher learning institutions have added the arts department, and the original arts institutions have enlarged the scale of enrollment and the scope of major extension, which have been expanded from pure arts major to application arts major. With the large-scale increasing of enrollment in the arts department, the construction of teaching buildings for arts department is thriving. But the systemic research on the design of teaching buildings for arts department is in lack, and many guideline bases can only be obtained from other types of construction standards.Teaching buildings for arts has special function requirements, rich space forms and bright image characteristics. In order to propose a research framework for the design of teaching buildings for that, the research of this article starts from the existing problems and combines with relevant theories and buildings to make analysis on the features of teaching buildings of arts departments of higher learning institutions.The article first expounds the background of the research, and defines the concept and scope of the research, and explains the goal and meaning of researching the teaching buildings of arts departments of higher learning institutions. The first chapter clearly defines the research scope, makes summarized description on the domestic and overseas development of excellent teaching buildings for arts departments, and makes analysis on the features of overseas excellent teaching buildings, points out the existing problems in the domestic teaching buildings for arts departments, and makes classification for the teaching buildings for arts departments of higher learning institutions from the three terms of art characteristic, type of major and type of institutions. To laying a foundation for the research in the following paragraphs, the article analyzes the characteristics of teaching buildings for arts departments of higher learning institutions from such three aspects as behavior mode, space characteristic, and image feature. And at last, it integrates excellent examples in domestic and overseas, points out the specific design methods for functional space arrangement, space design and image expression, and tries to propose reference values for the relevant guideline in the design of teaching buildings for arts departments of higher learning institutions. In order to have a certain guidance effect for the design work for teaching buildings for arts departments of higher learning institutions, the article takes the research mode of using the experience of selected points to promote the work in the entire area, strives to cover the entirety and give prominence to key points.
