A Study of Promoting High-school Students’ Competence of Self-correcting Errors in Writing

Listening, speaking, reading and writing are the main and important four skills in language learning. Writing plays a very important part in these skills. But the present situation is that: no or few high schools especially junior high schools have set up formal classes especially for writing, in which students can receive regular education of writing theoretically as well as practically. What the students do now is to write a composition after class (without direct instruction by the teachers), then hand it in. After the teacher has marked the composition, it is returned to the students. In this circumstance, the competence of writing is hardly improved by this means. The basic reason is that the students have hardly consciousness and competence of self-correcting errors (SCE).This study means to look for a variety of theoretical clues on the base of forerunners’ research. And at this premise, the author takes some measures or steps to carry out a series of teaching plans of writing to one of the two classes which are from a senior high school. The other class which is a control group is taught in traditional ways. Thus, this empirical study can be implemented smoothly.During the study, two parts of the questionnaires are firstly given to the subjects. These questionnaires mean to test the comparability between the two groups of subjects and the necessity of this study. When the students are doing the questionnaires, they are very attentive but are free to choose what they want to. The results of the questionnaires are believable. While the author is carrying out the different teaching plans of writing to the two classes, the different results gradually appear. And the differences are more obvious later. While using the new methods to teach the subjects, the author strengthens his consciousness and an action: improving the competence of SCE by reading and reciting English texts. At the end of this study, the students are interviewed by the author. Active and approving answers are gained.Finally, the conclusion that it is feasible indeed has been drawn. It does work in helping the students improve their consciousness and competence of SCE in some degrees. Besides, they also improve the other skills beyond their expectations.
