A Stylistic Analysis on Three Short Stories of O. Henry

O. Henry is one of the most important writers of the early twentieth century American literary history , its works by the love and praise of readers around the world . Past studies have evaluated their work done and more from the literary point of view, and little attention to the levels of Linguistics and Stylistics . Selected three short stories of O. Henry - Gift of the Magi \the theory is based on the level of the word lines , vocabulary , syntax and semantics of quantitative analysis , and find out at all levels of the stylistic features contrast BROWN and LOB corpus . Level of word lines , and BROWN and LOB corpus compared , 3OHENRY more frequent use of quotation marks , question marks and exclamation average paragraph length is greater than the first two . In addition , selected three novels more use periods and commas . Lexical level , 3OHENRY than BROWN and LOB word length shorter pronouns more ; 3OHENRY nouns percentage is greater than the other parts of speech . Syntactic selected discourse most significant stylistic features is the use of short sentences , sentence fragments , and less use of the passive voice . Semantic level , 3OHENRY corpus of discourse more using the formulation of the third person , and makes use of a variety of cohesive devices and rhetorical article concise and vivid . O. Henry -style twists and turns as its emblem at the end is very significant and is noteworthy characteristics.
