Current field calculation plays an important part in grounding electrode design of HVDC projects. This paper researched current field calculating method for HVDC grounding electrode, and the calculating method based on resistance network model was introduced; then, relevant problems and the characteristics of current field were discussed; finally software for HVDC grounding electrode design was developed. The main content of this paper is included as follows:1. Current field calculating method for HVDC grounding electrode based on resistance network model was introduced. The range and dividing method of grounding electrode field was analyzed according to different shapes of electrodes. Under the same conditions, the calculating result of current field was compared with the result by relevant software and reports. The consistency of the result verifies the validity of the calculating method.2. Relevant problems and the characteristics of current field were discussed. First of all, the current field result under different field range was calculated, based on which the recommended field range was decided; then, the influence of electrode resistance on current field result was analyzed, different shapes of electrodes were taken into consideration; finally the current field distribution characteristic was discussed under the circumstance of irregular earth resistance on horizontal direction.3. Software for HVDC electrode design was developed based on resistance network model. The main idea and basic module of the software were introduced; the problems that encountered during software design period were analyzed; and the software was used to calculating an HVDC project, by comprehensive analysis, the recommended design plan was concluded.
