English vocabulary teaching and learning has always been a problem for teachers and students, which can only be solved in scientific approaches. In this thesis, Mind Map is applied to the teaching and learning of English vocabulary for senior primary school students. The thesis explains the significance and aims of the research, as well as the plan and the procedures of the application of Mind Map in the teaching and learning of English vocabulary. Data analysis and research results with two classes of Grade Three in Shanghai Huangpu School have proved the effectiveness of Mind Map in the teaching and learning of English vocabulary. The use of Mind Map in vacabulary teaching not only enhances vocabulary learning but also further stimulates senior primary school students’interest in English learning. The use of Mind Map in the teaching and learning of English vocabularyis presented in detail with case studies in the thesis.The thesis includes the following six chapters.In Chapter 1, the significance of the research is discussed through the introduction of the importance of vocabulary teaching in English teaching and the present situation of vocabulary learning in primary schools. The aims and approaches of the research are also introduced.In Chapter 2, students’ways of thinking, learning and memorizing are studied, through which we find that a tool, the Mind Map, which makes our thinking character visible, can be used to solve the problems. The development of Mind Map in education, its application value in English teaching, and its inspiration in English vocabulary teaching are also discussed in this chapter.In Chapter 3, the way of hand painting Mind Map is introduced. The structure charts of the four kinds of Mind Map are explained through its combination of the textbook in the nine-year compulsory education system and the structure links among words themselves in some particular ways.In Chapter 4, the experiment is presented. Through the analysis of the data and the study of the questionnaire, Mind Map is proved to be feasible and effective in enhancing senior primary school students’learning of English words.In Chapter 5, Mind Map is applied in the actual teaching. The specific procedures of its application in classroom settings are introduced in three aspects:1) the background of teaching,2) the record of teaching,3) the summery and reflection of teaching.In Chapter 6, the followings are found through the analysis and summarization of the whole experiment.1. The application of Mind Map as a way to support senior primary school students English vocabulary learning is feasible.2. Mind Map in enhancing third graders’memorization of English vocabulary is effective.3. Teachers have the capability of designing and painting Mind Map effectively, as well as helping students to use it flexibly.At last, the defects and the limits in the research are summarized, and a brighter future is looked into.
