Although Chinese language teaching in Israel has been carried out for more than ten years, it is still in its initial stage and is not as widespread as, for example, compared in U.S., Canada, UK, Germany, Korea, Japan, Thailand and other countries. Besides, the research literature in this field is relatively poor. Recently, with the development of trade relations between China and Israel, learning Chinese is becoming more and more popular. In Israel, there are totally three Departments of East Asia Studies located in three different universities. In addition, there is a Confucius Institute in the city of Tel Aviv-economic and cultural center of Israel. Many language colleges now provide Chinese language courses, even in some elementary schools Chinese language classes recently begin to appear. Under the attention of Israeli government and the Ministry of Education, Chinese language has good prospects for development in Israel. In this thesis, Tel Aviv was selected as a research object because of its significance in Israel. Here, features were analyzed by studying public schools, private language schools, tutoring and other educational institutions. Consequently, the current status of Chinese teaching and learning in Tel Aviv was presented. Based on the above analysis and research, some advices on developing and improving the situation of Chinese teaching and learning in this area were proposed, such as:strengthening communication between the Education Ministries of the two countries; establishing a Chinese teachers association in Israel; improving Chinese language study environment; improving the availability of the teaching materials; proposing new teaching schemes specially designed for local students’ needs.
