The Training of Cognitive Listening Strategies Based on Task-Based Approach

Listening strategy training starts from the 1990’s.Based on the teaching model, many researchers both at home and abroad have done many researches, upon which it is widely acknowledged that listening strategy training is feasible and effective. This study focuses on the suggestion of more valid listening strategies for senior high students.From the perspective of cognition, the study designs a questionnaire for investigating the listening comprehension difficulties. Focusing on the students’ difficulties in listening comprehension, this study integrates the task-based model into our listening comprehension strategies to construct an effective and practical listening strategy training model. We apply the model to doing an experiment in order to study the effectiveness it has on improving the students’listening proficiency, on arousing the students’interests in listening, on promoting the consciousness of using the right strategies and the preference compared with the traditional way of teaching. According to the systematic survey on the students’difficulties in listening comprehension and the situation on listening strategies by means of questionnaires and strictly following the steps of the experimental design, the thesis concluded as follows; Firstly, our model can indeed improve the students’listening proficiency. What’s more, the application of this model can arouse the students’interests in listening. Thirdly, the newly-constructed model can improve the consciousness of using the right strategies. Finally, compared with the traditional way of teaching, the newly-constructed model is more suitable for the listening strategies training than the traditional one.The thesis is made up of the following seven chapters:Chapter One serves as the background of the research, it introduces the content, purpose of the thesis,discusses the necessity and significance of study and the structure of thesis. Chapter Two is the literature review, it provides empirical studies both at home and abroad on listening strategies training and listening difficulties. Chapter Three serves as the theory background on listening comprehension, listening strategies and task-based approach to provide a background of the study. Chapter Four provides a thorough study of the difficulties in listening comprehension, the situation on listening strategies and come up with the idea of constructing a new model. Chapter Five is a detailed introduction of the newly-constructed teaching model.Chapter Six focuses on empirical study.including the hypotheses, subjects, instruments, procedures and data analysis. Chapter Seven is the conclusion of the thesis and points out the limitations of the model with suggestions for further research and improvement.
