In recent years, dictionary use research has become a hot issue in lexicography research and received much concern from many scholars and researchers. The research of dictionary use in western countries began very early and has got very fruitful results, while domestic studies began much later and mainly learn from foreign experience. English dictionaries as a bridge connecting native language and English language provide us with the language knowledge we need and play a very important role in English learning. For high school students, the effect of dictionary use in their learning cannot be ignored. Vocabulary teaching is not only of great priority, but also a difficult teaching task in Chinese high schools. A lot of studies have pointed out the importance of dictionary in vocabulary learning. Most of the studies focus on college students with higher English proficiency, however, researches taking high school students as subjects are rare. High school students have relatively low vocabulary proficiency and have many problems in their vocabulary learning. Many students still learn new words by rote memorization and haven’t become aware of the importance of using the dictionary. Cultivating students’habit of dictionary use in vocabulary learning in the initial stages can lay a solid foundation for their future learning and have a positive effect on their development. This paper aims to explore the correlation between dictionary use and vocabulary proficiency of senior high school students in an attempt to bring some implications and guidance for English teaching and learning.Firstly, this thesis investigates the dictionary use of senior high school students from nine aspects through the questionnaire of the dictionary use. These nine aspects include the number of the dictionaries that they have, the time that they begin to use dictionaries, the types of dictionaries that they commonly use, the purpose of using dictionaries (in which activity they use dictionaries), what they look for in dictionaries, the methods of finding meanings of words, the specific circumstances of looking for dictionaries (the specific circumstances under which a dictionary is used), the students’awareness of the importance of dictionaries and the self-evaluation and the demand of dictionary use, the use of electronic dictionary . And an English vocabulary test is employed to obtain the students’vocabulary test scores. At last, based on the data obtained an analysis is conducted to explore the correlation between the students’dictionary use and their English vocabulary proficiency. The results show that the students’dictionary use and their English vocabulary proficiency have positive correlation. This thesis analyzes the correlation between the students’nine aspects of the dictionary use and their English vocabulary proficiency.Through the analysis of the high school students’dictionary use and their English vocabulary proficiency, this thesis brings up some implications for English teaching and learning. The implications of the students’dictionary use are using the dictionary as early as possible, forming the good habit of using the dictionary, choosing the proper dictionary, forming the habit of referring to the dictionary in a variety of activities, learning to make full use of the dictionary to play the biggest role of the dictionary, treating the electronic dictionary from a dialectical view and using the electronic dictionary reasonably. For teachers, they should pay much attention to dictionary use teaching, try to cultivate the students’awareness of dictionary use and improve their independent learning ability, arouse the students’ enthusiasm of referring to the dictionary, teach students the skills and strategies of using the dictionary. The implications of the students’vocabulary learning include using the dictionary to strengthen vocabulary memorization, using the dictionary to enlarge the vocabulary, and using the dictionary to improve the vocabulary proficiency.
