Atmospheric polarization pattern is one of the natural qualities of the earth, and it can hardly be disturbed or destroyed in a wide range. It can even provide navigation information in the special environment that has low/no satellite signal. Therefore the study on polarized light navigation has a good prospect of military application. Based on research results in biological mechanism of polarized light navigation, we design a polarized light navigation sensor imitating POL-neurons and carry out the study of its working performance. Then we apply the sensor to mobile robot which can be used as reference to subsequent researches.This paper includes the following contents:(1) Research results at home and abroad in some creatures’behavior and mechanism of polarized light navigation are summed up. Based on them, biological structures and function mechanism of these creatures’sensitivity to polarized light are analyzed.(2) A kind of polarized light navigation sensor is designed, imitating the polarization perception model of the POL-neurons. Error sources of the sensor are analyzed, and compensation hardware circuit is designed.(3) Performance test experiments for the polarized light navigation sensor in different conditions are carried out. The sensor realizes steady output of the polarization of angle, which validates the rationality of the design.(4) Application test experiments for the polarized light navigation sensor in mobile robot are carried out. And the results show the feasibility of the sensor’s application in actual navigation.
