The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different species meats on growth, digestion metabolism and antioxidant status in rats and to provide theoretical basis for the meat protein source in human diet and nutrition in-depth study. The experiment included there parts:The first experiment was designed to study the effects of different species meats on growth and digestive function in rats. A total of 120 male SD rats of clean grade with body weight of about 177 g were allotted to four groups with six replicates each five in a randomized complete block design. Three groups were assigned for high protein level groups (CP%:31), and one group as basal diet CP%:18). Dog meat group,mutton group,duck meat group were assigned for high protein level groups (CP%:31). Three groups replaced the main dietary protein source with the dog meat, mutton, duck meat. Experiment lasted for 4w. The results were shown as follows:1. compared with the control group, the daily weight gain of dog meat group significantly increased (P<0.05) and the daily intake and the feed to gain ratio significantly reduced (P<0.01), the daily weight gain of mutton group had a trend to increase and the daily intake and the feed to gain ratio had a trend to decrease, the daily weight gain of duck meat group significantly decreased (P<0.01) and the feed to gain ratio significantly increased (P<0.01).2. compared with the control group, the pepsin activity of mutton group and duck meat group significantly increased (P< 0.05), the trypsin activity of groups with different species meat significantly increased (P<0.01) and the mutton group was highest; 3.compared with the control group, the height of villus of groups with different species meat significantly increased (P< 0.01), the depth of crypt of duck meat group significantly increased (P<0.05) and the dog meat group had a trend to increase but did not reach the significant level, the V/C of mutton group significantly increased (P<0.05). By comprehension consideration, dog meat group and mutton group could of promote the growth, mutton group could significantly increase the digestion of rat.The second experiment was designed to study the effects of different species meats on serum metabolism index in rats. The results were shown as follows:1. compared to the control group, ALT、ALP activity and the level of GLU were enhanced significantly (P<0.01) and the level of GLB was significantly increased (P <0.05)、the level of ALB was significantly decreased (P<0.05) in rats with diets of dog meat, ALP activity and the level of GLU were enhanced significantly (P<0.01)、the level of ALB was significantly decreased (P<0.05) in rats with diets of mutton meat, ALT and AST activity、the level of BUN and GLU were enhanced significantly (P<0.01) in rats with diets of duck meat.2. compared with the control group, the total amount of non essential amino acids and amino acids in serum of rats that were fed meat of different species significantly decreased (P< 0.01); compared with the control group, the content of methionine in serum of rats that were fed meat of different species significantly decreased (P< 0.01), and that of duck meat group was lowest. By comprehension consideration, the body metabolism of rats in dog meat group was enhanced, it is benefit to protein synthesis with feeding the high protein diet.The third experiment was designed to study the effects of different species meats on antioxidant status in rats. The results were shown as follows:1. compared to the antioxidant status of control group liver, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase(SOD)activity were significantly decreased(P<0.01)and the level of malondialdehyde(MDA) was enhanced significantly (P<0.01) in rats with diets of dog meat, GSH-Px and catalase(CAT) activity were significantly decreased (P < 0.01)、the level of MDA was significantly increased (P<0.05) in rats with diets of mutton meat, GSH-Px activity was significantly increased (P<0.05) and the level of MDA had a trend to increase in rats with diets of duck meat.2. compared to the antioxidant status of control group kidney, GSH-Px activity was significantly decreased (P<0.05) and the level of MDA was enhanced significantly (P<0.01) in rats with diets of dog meat, GSH-Px activity was decreased significantly (P<0.01) and the level of MDA was enhanced significantly (P<0.01) in rats with diets of mutton meat, GSH-Px activity and the level of MDA were enhanced significantly (P <0.01)、CAT activity was significantly increased (P<0.05) in rats with diets of duck meat.3. compared to the antioxidant status of control group serum, GSH-Px activity was significantly increased (P<0.05) and the level of MDA had a trend to increase in rats with diets of dog meat, GSH-Px activity was enhanced significantly (P<0.01)、CAT activity had a trend to increase、the level of MDA had a trend to decrease in rats with diets of duck meat. By comprehension consideration, duck meat has some antioxidant ability.
