Effects on Telomere Length of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer by Chemotherapy

Objective:To investigate the clinical significance of the telomere length vari-ation in the progress of epithelial ovarian cancer, and effects of chemotherapy on it.Methods:We collected peripheral blood samples of 30 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, before and after chemotherapy,60 age-matched cancer-free women as controls. And DNA were extracted and quantified, Ct values of telomere and albumin were measured by quantitative PCR, and the relative length of the telomere was calcu-lated.Results:1.Compared with control group (200.45±7.64), the average telomere length of DNA (68.78±5.83) in peripheral blood of the patients with epithelial ovari-an cancer reduced significantly, and there was significant difference (P<0.01).2. The later pathological stage of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer is, the shorter the telomere length is.3. Compared with that (68.78±5.83) before chemotherapy, the average telomere length (98.01±6.54) of epithelial ovarian cancer patients, after 5 cycles of chemotherapy, has been extended, and there is statistical difference (P <0.05).Conclusions:Telomere length is related to the occurrence and development of epithelial ovarian cancer. Telomere length can be regarded as one of the biomarkers for early diagnosis and follow-up of epithelial ovarian cancer. Maybe through the role of telomeres, chemotherapy has a positive effect on epithelial ovarian cancer. Corollary to hTERET gene promoter mediated gene therapy of cancer is expected to be a promising treatment strategy for epithelial ovarian cancer.
