The research object of this thesis is the Hong Kong film director Wang Kar-Wai’s movies. More specifically speaking, is the offscreen voice which was used in Wong Kar-War’s movies on a large scale. And from the linguistics angle to analyses the offscreen voice in Wong’s film, in order to explore the characteristics of language use.So, what is the offscreen voice, why do we study the offscreen voice? And why do we study the offscreen voice in Wong’s film? Offscreen voice, just as its name, is the voice which is not from the visual space of the screen frame. By contrast, it’s the dialogue between characters in the film. Before Wong Kar-Wai, there is little offscreen voice in Chinese film, even there is some offscreen voice in film, it’s all for the sake of the film’s narration. For example, Zhang Yimou’s film Hong Gao Liang. Generally speaking, in the classic Hollywood film, offscreen voice is also for the use of the narration. But the offscreen voice that was used only for expressing the characters’inner world just like the offscreen voice in Wong’s films:Midnight Express, Days of Being Wild, Times of Ash, etc which became the signature of’Wong’s style’. In the context of nowadays’movies and TV dramas, in which offscreen voice became more and more popular, how to make the offscreen voice magic weapon winner is undoubtedly worth of our concern. While, Wong’s offscreen voice can also be the successful example of using offscreen voice. In this thesis, these problems will be analyzed in detail in the chapter two.Context, stylistic and style are three important elements in the language using. So first of all, I will also research the offscreen voice in Wong’s film from these three respect. The background of Wong’s film is Hong Kong’s urban scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Because of the thorough understanding of his own city, Wong Kar-Wai has found a clever way to express his special experience in this environment. That is to take the characters’inner emotions to prop up the whole movie, and narration is no longer as the movie’s focus. The offscreen voice in Wong Kar-Wai’s film was growing up in this context. So in the language style, and also engraved the Wong Kar-Wai’s unique performance style. In the second chapter, there will be the research of the style, stylistic and context in Wong’s offscreen voice.Chapter three, according to the special age and regional background and combining with the style and stylistic of offscreen voice, I will make a concrete analysis of language using features.Language and culture has close ties, the offscreen voice in Wong’s film reflected thick postmodern characteristics:weird analogy. Besides the postmodernism culture, general awareness, perceptual thinking and the pursuit of beauty and mysterious color expression in Wong’s offscreen voice increased the film’s oriental color.Previous studies of Wong’s films are stay in film photography, lens, music and other aspects. However, the current film scholars increasingly aware of the special value of offscreen voice, and began to explore the artistic charm of wong’s films. But, most of scholars study the offscreen voice in Wong’s films from the angle of literary and aesthetic, which is quite abstract, the effect of using this approach to understanding the obscure voice-over in Wong kar-wai film is not well. But this article research this title from the linguistics angle, analysis the voice deployment, vocabulary voice-over narration of choice, patterns and the sentence, and the selection of rhetoric. Meanwhile, this article has also research the context and style of the offscreen voice in Wong’s film. For the research of Wong’s films, it is a brand-new angle and research methods. For those views of Wong’s films of understanding and better interpretation offscreen voice, this article has provides a more subtle and more comprehensive reference, and also has done a further research to our language in specific application.
