General education curriculum system is a combination of idea and implementation. It runs through the whole process of education. It is applied in the curriculum, in the class, in the school. It trains the modern students who have creativity, judgment and insight. Many kinds of research methods are used in this paper. A lot of general education materials are gathered. The domestic and foreign general curriculum theories are combed. The similarities and differences between the two countries in general education course process are compared and analyzed. The domestic and foreign typical university are selected and further researched from the curriculum concept, content and implementation, basing on this, the gap of general curriculum between American universities and China’s are summarized. The shortcomings of the course are concretely analyzed with needs to be improved, putting forward some constructive proposals in implements of our college general education.The article is divided into three parts:The first part investigates and analyzes the general education curriculum theory and status of American university. Firstly, more systematically discussed and analyzed the thoughts of general education courses. Then, curriculum implementations of several influential university are typically listed and analyzedThe second part introduces the thought evolution and practice of general education curriculum in China. The ancient traditional humanism education, liberal education and culture quality education actually pervaded with general education evolution. General education reform of curriculum implementation mode of China’s several spearheaded universities is introduced and analyzed, which is to find the achievements and deficiencies.The three part contrasts the similarities and differences between the idea and practice of general education in university education courses, pursuits comprehensive and multi-angle understanding. Four Suggestions have been put forward on development of university general education. First of all, the university should understand more value of general courses and improve goals of course. Secondly, the curriculum content should balance the knowledge structure. Thirdly, teachers should recognize the concepts of general education courses, improve teaching ability, strengthen practicality of the teaching and update the teaching form is not only beneficial to the self-development of teachers but also important for education curriculum implementation. Finally, Evaluation system is the institutional guarantee to encourage teachers’participation in the curriculum reform, urging students to treat general courses correctly, help school carry out general curriculum reform persistently.
