Research on the Influence of Mobile Phones on the Teenage Girls’ Peer Relationships

Through observing, recording, and analyzing the teenage girls(junior school) using their mobile phones in daily life, this research paies attention to the function and culture background of the mobile phones in teenage girls daily life’s networks, trying to figure out how the mobile phones perform in their life and culture framework as an accompanying media, and how to be used by teenage girls to build,consolidate,and strengthen their peer relationships.This research adopted qualitative research to probe into the motive and effect of mobile phones in their peer relationship by using in-depth interview, partly participatory observation, content analysis, and interviewee dairy. Besides that, combining uses and gratifications theory and daily life theory, this report discussed the interaction between teens and mobile phones, interaction between teenage girls, and the culture meaning behind the behavior.The result shows that, as a personal media, mobile phones have been a part of teenage girls daily life, and it started to bear some characteristics like fragmentation and ritualized. The positive correlation function of it is also very obvious in the interaction, especially the interaction between teenage girls. Through "sharing", youth girls obtain group identity from personalization; and then, continue the communication, which they didn’t finish in reality, leading to strengthening the peer relationship. That is, by using mobile phones, teenage girls can redefined and show themselves, repeat and emphasize the important group events, communicate to each other without the limitation of space and time, and finally maintain the peer relationship and improve it.
