Traditionally, the radar systems are developed from the ground up, using proprietary hardware and software architectures. In practice, this traditional development model is expensive and requires long design times. Further more, as IT’s fast development, because each radar system employs unique architectures and technology, it is much difficult and expensive to maintain and upgrade the systems.The shipborne navigational radar system,which is one of the important shipborne subsystems,also has the same problems. So how to resolve these problems becomes much important.And,the proliferation of open systems and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies have paved the way for resolving these problems in the development process , maintenance ,and upgrade of radar systems.But open system architecture and COTS are about more than reducing operation and maintenance costs. Further more, they speed up the development process ,increase the flexibility of the systems,and improve future technology-insertion opportunities to provide access to the latest technology advances.Based on this,the article carries on a study of how to use open systems principles to design shipborne navigational radar systems,and presents a model of shipborne navigational radar open systems architecture which is based on PC.The model adopts modular hardware and software, layered design, open architecture computing environment, and decomposes a radar system into individual loosely coupled components and subsystems, which perform specific radar functions.The article also gives a redefinition of radar system,which is composed of radar sensor,radar open application module,radar console&display,and mainly discusses about the inter-structure and basic procedure of radar open application module.The system’s hardware environment is based on PC and shipborne infrastructure (CAN bus,LAN) ,using PC in place of the custom radar equipment, which is of high openness.Finally,the article implements an experiment to test the architecture’s feasibility.
