Uyghur is the major ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, mostly lives in southern Xinjiang. Their very resplendent long history and culture is one of the important components of Chinese culture. Uyghur cultures have aroused the interests of many scholars around the world. Atlas is of great importance in Uyghur clothing culture. Up to now, there have been numerous studies about the significant role of silk culture among Uyghur from historical cultural point of view and national esthetic point of view. With the rapid development of social change, changing of the handicraft making is inevitable, Atlas is no exception. However there is no systematic study about the traditional craftwork development and change of Atlas. With the trend that all are emphasizing of protecting immaterial heritages, preserve traditional handcrafting of Atlas and inherit it is worthwhile.In this article field survey and literature data are being used coherently, and systematic research about Uyghur Atlas handcrafting was done by using some other related subjects point.The whole context of this article is made up of three parts as following:Atlas cloth is different from each other in the matter of dying material, pattern and quality. Traditional Atlas cloth is mainly made of silk. However, with the development of society, there appeared many types of Atlas, such as Mixed Atlas and Spun Gold Atlas. The first chapter is the study process to the Atlas’s grain sample. It is not enough to classify the grain sample of Atlas by traditional methods, because in traditional method it could be classified into four process, but now into fourteen process. In the hope of letting more and more people know about the classification and grain sample design of Atlas, we reclassified the grain sample. Craftwork of Atlas include taking out of raw silk and twisting, silk-spinning, pattern making and silk looming. Presently, some of the traditional methods were abandoned in the process of Atlas making. Chapter two mainly discusses the process of Atlas making. Atlas making is the integrated work of weaving and dyeing. So weaving and dyeing by traditional technics and weaving fashion and dyeing materials are also studied. As Atlas making is constantly changing, preserving Atlas handcraft is facing severe challenges. Moreover, utilization of Atlas has already exceeded from the clothing field, entered many other fields. Chapter third mainly talks about the social role of Atlas among Uyghur people, and some ballads were given to validate it’s long history among Uyghur. AtlasI mentioned in the papers in a few key issues:first, the wormwood and the lion’s social status, secondly, should attach importance to training, in passing on the basis of the people to uphold tradition atlas training. in the textile mill tradition atlas inheritance can be one of the training base. in Jiya the help of the government should establish and Atlas the training courses, train and a number of new generation of inheritance. Then, in primary and secondary education in the course of study. as in the prosperous areas hotan in primary and secondary school courses; to establish the national cultural knowledge into the classroom situation in Uyghur traditional handicraft inheritance education. finally, in the university of the opening of the relevant professional and university education is uyghur atlas traditional arts and crafts textile and other cultural heritage of the most important form of education.
