Research on Weight Loss Effect by Exercise Combined with Massage on Severe Obese Adolescents

PurposeThe practice of exercise-induced weight loss reveals that the reduction of abdominal fat is significantly greater than that of hips and thighs, therefore the reduction of waistline is easier than hip circumference and thigh circumference. The present research used massage method on hips and thighs in the process of exercises aiming for more fat consumption in hips and thighs while reducing accumulation by exercises, so as to improve their body morphology and to achieve greater results for fat loss.Methods42 severe obese (F%≥40) adolescents are from“Weight Loss Camp”in 2010, shanghai. All subjects have written informed consent to participate in the study voluntary. Then we divided them randomly into two groups, exercise-massage group and exercise-only group for a 4- week exercise training to lose weight. The subjects were pass a series of the morphology indices, including height, body weight, body mass index(BMI), waistline, hip circumference, thigh circumference, body fat percentage, as well as blood biochemical indicators including fasting insulin(FINs), fasting blood glucose(FBG), total cholesterol(TC), triglyceride(TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), examining exercise capacity and health condition especially cardiovascular system function by exercise load test. Based on the test results above, we set exercise prescription and nutrition prescription for each individual. Severe obesity adolescent took part in 4 weeks weight reduction plan, 6 days per week and 5 to 6 hours each day by moderate or low intensity long duration aerobic exercise, and they are offered reasonable daily calories and nutrition, besides sports drinks without limit.Same measurement and examine have been carried out after 4 weeks. On the first day the exercise-massage group do blood test 3 times that 1.5h after lunch, after massage and after exercise to determine TG, hematocrit(Hct), and free fatty acids(FFA). The massage was given on hips and thighs for 1h each day by professional masseur before exercises. In order to exclude the impact of diet on postprandial lipids, we set the ordinary diet group which is consist of 16 overweight (25≤F%<30) or normal weight(F%<25)college girl. They were offered a reasonable lunch and had blood test before lunch as well as 0.5h,1h,1.5h,2h after lunch to determine Hct and TG.The data have been analyzed by SPSS13.0 statistical package in paired T test and independent-samples T test. Results(1) The body weight, body fat percentage and BMI has decreased evidently on severe obese adolescents after a 4-week weight reduction plan. Body weight decreased 9.0kg for exercise-massage group and 7.9kg for exercise-only group(decreased by 8.7% and 8.4%).Body fat percentage decreased 7.1% for exercise-massage group and 6.5% for exercise-only group(decreased by 15.3% and 14.4%).BMI decreased 3.3 for exercise-massage group and 3.2 for exercise-only group(decreased by 9.1% and 9.7%).(2) After 4 weeks weight control, the blood lipid of both groups has improved a lot. The levels of TG, TG, FINs and LDL-C had a significantly decrease(p<0.01).HDL-C of exercise-only group reduced from 0.98±0.08mmol/L to 0.82±0.01mmol/L, but HDL-C/LDL-C ratio increased evidently(p<0.01). The decrease of HDL-C in exercise-massage group had no significant change. FBG has no significant change.(3)The changes of waistline, hip circumference and thigh circumference in both groups has significantly decreased. The results showed rate of descent in waistline of exercise-only group was more obvious than exercise-massage group, but the difference is not significant. Rate of descent in hip circumference and thigh circumference of exercise-massage group were more obvious than exercise-only group(highly significant).(4) The level of serum TG rose from 0.74±0.73mmol/L to 0.86±0.78mmol/L on severe obese adolescents after massage, and TG level declined to 0.84±0.70mmol/L after exercise.(5) The level of serum TG of ordinary diet group before lunch was 0.815±0.335mmol/L, It rose immediately after lunch,1 hour after lunch reached 1.124±0.486mmol/L,and then gradually decreased,1.5 hours after lunch was 1.067±0.470 mmol/L,2 hours after lunch was 1.047±0.512 mmol/L. The postprandial Hct maintain stability.Conclusions(1) It prompted that 4-week weight reduction exercise with proper diet control can effectively bring down the obese degree of severe obese adolescents, and improve their body morphology indices to various levels.(2) It is a utility way to bring down their fasting insulin, improving fasting blood glucose and blood lipid, which has an obvious effect on promoting obese adolescents’health by 4 weeks moderate-low intensity exercise.(3) It prompted that exercise combine massage was a utility way to increase the fat mobilization rate. The decrease of hip circumference and thigh circumference became obviously keeping pace with waistline, and enhanced the effect of weight loss.(4) Compared with body weight and BMI, body fat percentage is the preferred index to evaluate the degree of obesity and exercise-induced weight loss.
