In the early 1920s, new humanism, with some features of traditional Chinese Culture, is introduced by the writers of Xue Heng school. After the introduction, the supporters are involved in the debate of traditional ideas and modern thoughts. At that time, although the idea of the conservative Xue Heng school is unique, it is still in dispute. In spite of some differences from the writers of Xue Heng school, Liang Shiqiu also favors new humanism and interprets it more profoundly.On the basis of describing the social background, Chinese history and differences in educational background and thoughts between Lu Xun and Chinese new humanists, this thesis attempts to study the controversy between Lu Xun and Liang Shiqiu and the writers of Xue Heng school. Reasons of the debate are explored in this paper. Similarities and differences of the two groups are presented as well. By introducing the ideas of Liang Shiqiu and writers of Xue Heng school who sublate new humanism, the author also wants to point out this controversy’s realistic meaning.Overall, the current paper provides a detail description of the controversy from the following aspects:Firstly, it presents changes in ideas from humanism of ancient Greece to modern new humanism in China. The connotation of humanism, humanism in Renaissance, the relationship between Irving Babbitt’s new humanism and spread of new humanism in China are introduced in this paper.Secondly, through the discussion of the controversy between Lu Xun and writers of Xue Heng school and Liang Shiqiu, the current thesis reveals their different values.Finally, by analyzing the similarities and differences between Lu Xun’s thoughts and modern new humanism in china, the paper discusses the realistic meaning and the inspiration of the controversy.
