Translator’s Concern for Reader’s Reception in Literary Translation

By focusing on translator’s subjectivity from the perspective of reception aesthetics, this thesis aims to discuss how translator’s subjectivity works in literal translation. With the“cultural turn”in the western world in the 1970s, culture-oriented approaches to translation studies have been popular in the translation field, with translator’s subjectivity as a hot topic. This thesis, based on the reception aesthetics, holds that the translator should exert his subjectivity to meet the reader’s needs, adapt to their habits, or introduce alien cultural elements, all of which should be embodied in their translation works.Thus thesis takes reception aesthetics of Germany Constants School as the theoriatical support. Arising in the late 1960s and reaching its zenith in the 1970s, reception aesthetics led to the diverting of Chinese traditional translation aesthetics from focusing on the original author and text to the readers, which takes an important place in literary research history. Soon after this literary theory was introduced into translation study, the focus of the study was shifted to translators who were particular readers as well immediately.This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which gives a brief introduction to the aim, significance and layout of the thesis. The second chapter is literature review. It briefly introduces the historical relationship of translation and aesthetics both in the weatern world and China; the essence of reception aesthetics; the emergence, development and research status of aesthetic reception in China; and reception aesthetics and translator’s subjectivity. The third chapter is a case study on literary translation, in which translated works by some well-known translators are selected for case analysis, such as the novel Red Sorghum translated by Howard Goldblatt (1939- ), the prose The Transient Days translated by Zhang Peiji(1921- ) and some ancient Chinese poems translated by Xu Yuanchong (1921- ). And the fourth chapter brings out the conclusion of this thesis.
