The process of globalization continues to advance along with the fact that global issues have become increasingly prominent, declaring the era of global governance, thus, the diplomatic decision-making of a nation is facing an increasingly complex international and domestic environment. Academic exchange, for its collection of views of the elite group, plays as a "think tank" role with its unparalleled flexibility compared with inter-governmental diplomacy. To governments in terms of their diplomatic policy-making, academic exchange could be recognized and relied on.As a peaceful rising power, it is essential in shaping an objective and friendly international environment of public opinion that Chinese government makes full use of the channel and establishing high-end platforms of international academic exchange in order to make its diplomacy ideas and policy be known, understood and even identified with.This essay attempts to analyze a new concept:academic diplomacy, while further discriminate its definition, characteristics and relationship with similar concepts. On this basis, through applying the research methods of case study and comparative analysis, an international outstanding academic exchange platform in Britain-Wilton Park is selected for the analysis of its object, history, management and operation mechanism as in-depth interpretation, which concludes the experience to maintain a high international reputation and influence of the strengths in contrast with an internationally academic exchange platform-the World Forum on China Studies, which the Chinese government currently spares no effort to build.The thesis is structured into four parts, Section I:Academic diplomacy-the theoretical exploration, will focus on the probe of academic theory of academic diplomacy; Section II: Wilton Park-a successful modality of British academic diplomacy, in this section will carry out a detailed view of WP’s experience and its mode; Section III:the World Forum on China Studies-China’s active exploration of academic diplomacy, will focus on assessing its operation model and characteristics. Section IV:Reflections and recommendations on China’s academic diplomacy-the construction of the World Forum on China Studies as an example. This section will employ the comparative method, drawing on the useful experience of Wilton Park, combined with the reality of the situation of Chinese academic diplomacy, to propose relevant policy recommendations in connection with the pattern of World Forum on China Studies.
