The Research on Subject Service System in University Libraries

Librarians always think subject service is to make subject librarians to do subject-oriented information service. But after through user liaison as principal character in the first stage of subject service, and embedding into user’s environment and the process of user’s studying and research as principal character in the second stage of subject service, we find that we are still far from success. With users’information environment changing, users’information needs have also changed, and subject service must change too. We ought to relocate subject service. Analyzing from macroscopic angle, with system approach, the trend of subject service development is constructing integrated subject service system, meeting the user’s all-wave information needs, supporting the users for all-wave information assurance and technical assistance. The subject service system concludes service subject, service object, service platform, service administration as well as quality evaluation. Service subject is subject-librarian-led subject service team. Subject librarians’quality, cultivated and team development is the key of subject service quality determinations; Service object is subject users. Analyzing users’characteristic, collected and studying uses’information demands is the first work of subject service; Subject service platform is a base of subject service. In view of actual situation of Chinese universities, subject service physical platform can be constructed based on medical library, department library in the university, and the space for characteristic collection,subject service virtual platform is constructed based on subject information gateways; Service administration is a method of guaranteeing subject service system to operate efficiently. It is divided macroscopic administrative level, middle administrative level, and microcosmic administrative level in close cooperation. Quality evaluation can guarantee subject service system to keep work better. Approaches based on subject users’satisfaction and laying down scientific, all-around operating rules is the cardinal principle of quality evaluation.
