As "people-oriented" is emphasized in the modern management of library, it is particularly important to carry out user research. Medical colleges in national regions are at a disadvantage in many aspects, such as the geographical environment, the local economy and culture, and the students’source, so their library service is limited in depth and width to some extent. How to make their library serve to teaching and science research better? From the perspective of cognitive psychology, this study investigated the process and its influencing factors of acquiring, absorbing and using information by users from medical colleges for nationalities, and examined the effect of the manners of offering information and service on user’s acceptance and use of information in order to guide library information service and make it serve user better.This study is divided into five parts. (1) Reviewing the current status of research in cognition of library users at home and abroad, and describing the significance and necessity of this study. (2)Analyzing user’s cognitive processes, its influencing factors, and cognitive characteristics. (3) Investigating the effect of user cognition on library service. (4) Examining user’s current status of cognition to library by a questionnaire survey on users from medical colleges for nationalities, and analyzing the influence and its reasons of the existing library service on users in order to find better objectives and solutions in organizing, revealing, propagandizing and generalizing information resource, in improving on the item, content and method of service, and in user training. (5) Presenting the measures of improving library service which are aimed at the existing defects. The utilization rate of library literature resource and the degree of user satisfaction with the library service will be increased by raising user’s cognitive ability, providing information organization and service which conform to user cognition, increasing the convenience to users to obtain information, and making the knowledge they obtaining be easy to understand and absorb.
