Along with the development of hydro turbine-generator sets to the high-performance and large capacity in China, the routine maintenance work has set higher requirements. The traditional scheduled maintenance system flaws become increasingly evident. The demand of condition-based maintenance is more and more urgent. At present, the hydropower plants equipment and automation systems become increasingly complex, so that high-quality maintenance personnel have become the key to the success of maintenance work. How to improve the technical level hydropower plant employees and business proficiency to achieve condition-based maintenance is of great significance.This paper analyzes the virtual reality technology in the development of the status quo at home and abroad. Maintenance and training for the current hydropower plants in the process of confronting the practical problems, launched a three-dimensional model-based virtual hydro turbine-generator sets maintenance training and study. Through virtual reality technology to improve the intelligibility of the equipment and information operable to achieve hydro turbine-generator sets from direct physical space to virtual reality space transformation, enhanced perceptual knowledge of trained personnel, the plant’s employees to acquire new technology to improve the operational capacity and work efficiency has an important role.Combined with the subproject named“Hydropower Plant Optimal Maintenance System (HOMS)”, which is cooperated with the Gezhouba Hydropower Plant of China Yangtze Power Co. Ltd, this paper firstly analyies the characteristics and development of the current domestic hydropower plant maintenance system and presents the important role of the virtual reality technology and its application in the training of maintenance. Then this paper discusses the design process under the personal computer mode and shows the information query, maintenance guide, disassembly presentations. At the same time for the practical needs of Gezhouba Hydropower Plant, through the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) the maintenance guidance and training platform for network-based application technology studies have been developed. The virtual scene under the human-computer interaction function has been improved as well as the file transfer process optimization has been given.Finally, the paper is summarized and proposes further research combined with the status quo and the demands of practical application.
