Kengo Kuma, a renowned architect nowadays, stands out in Japan in 1990s, who is one of the newborn generation of famous Japanese architects. His work and thought was directly influenced by the Japanese geographical condition and the cultural tradition. In addition, he was concerned about the development of world economy in order to study the relationship between architecture and environment, while kept thinking about the architectural design, which is fit for the chaotic urban environment, by architectural practice.This thesis conducts a research on Kengo Kuma. Above all, it shows out the variety of Kuma’s architecture style, which has undergone phases of post-modernism, particle architecture, and erase architecture. These changes are based on the acute response to the relationship between architecture and socio-economy, cultural traditions, and natural environment. Furthermore, he emphasized to weaken the "form" and pursue the "freedom", making the experiencing subject transform a spectator to a participant, which would link spatial and temporal elements together to create a kind of meaningful and infectious place. The positive possibility that replacing the building by the phenomenon of the building, develop an oriental viewpoint of cultural heritage for us. Finally, the thesis reveals a concept of tectonic based on traditional building construction. It is based on the analysis of Kuma’s practice, by which Kuma committed to recognition and exploring the properties and the processing tectonic of materials, which has also been interwoven into the tectonic process perfectly. His design responded the era of Modern Art, while recalled traditional culture and also extracted spirit of place, making his architecture be full of creative intelligence.The design thought of Kuma provides useful inspiration for contemporary Chinese architects to explore the traditional means of design. His architecture practice, which emphasizing the uniqueness of the own nation, also inspires the status and prospects of the architectural dialogue between Chinese and Western.
