A Study of Eight Devas in Sichuan Province in the Tang Period

The buddist art after experiencing period first time in South and North Dynasty high peak, in Tang Dynasty because the ruler permits concurrently and the religious policy, the buddist art in the further development at the same time, the localization progress is more and more quick. the eight devas of human form in early Tang Dynasty in sichuan.Because those eight devas sculptural works are more widespread than sculptural works in northern, and the research for eight devas benefit to the understanding a relation for mutually affecting of regions in sichuan and northern. the author collected the real object data and historical records of Guangyuan , Bazhong and Chengdu, and with help of methodology-iconography, iconology and development of styles, author think in early Tang period, had a kind of style became popular in Guangyuan, Bazhong and Chengdu . these eight devas sculptural works have much relation in lining up row order, individual characteristic and the details of individual, should belong to a same kind of style or the same model. in prosperous Tang another kind of style starts changing the development, and appear at the same time again in above three regions. after middle Tang period eight devas sculptural works inside for building resembling only and primarily local in Bazhong and Chengdu. Andthere are some else styles in Bazhong, from some records and data, author think this region had some contact with style of northern. and style in Chengdu get little change, there are some unique eight devas sculptural works , and author think it ’s result of the process of the localization.why eight devas sculptural works only widely accepted by sichuan ?author assort to explain this problem by studying folk religion of Tang Dynasty. The folks in Tang Dynasty have faith of ghost , god , buddism. there is a same point that folks believe in those religion is they want some earn from those ghosts and gods. Then this custom is reason why eight devas sculptural works is such puplor.
