Vocabulary teaching is an important part of foreign language teaching. Successful and effective vocabulary teaching is part of the accomplishment of teaching aims. Since the 1980s, task-based language teaching has received more and more attention by scholars at home and abroad. In China, many people engaged in the elementary education have done a large number of researches on the application of task-based language teaching. In most cases, researches are conducted in cities, where there are many good schools with good teachers and rich extracurricular resources. These provide a good basis for the application of the task-based teaching method. However, most people in China live in the countryside, whose children are educated in backward schools. As an English teacher of a rural middle school, I did the experimental research that applies the task-based teaching to the teaching of English vocabulary in the rural junior middle schools, in the hope of helping students to learn better and improving the situation of English teaching there.This thesis hypothesizes that task-based vocabulary teaching stimulates the students’ interest in learning, helps give students deep impressions of the basic meanings of words, and builds up their confidence. In the third chapter briefly introduces the status quo of English teaching in rural China. The fourth chapter is the main part of the thesis that includes a teaching experiment and data collection. Task-based English vocabulary teaching is applied to the task-based teaching in rural middle schools. The subjects of the experiment are Grade 7 students. According to the data collected from the experiment, the following result is obtained:the task-based language teaching helps improve the teaching of English vocabulary to middle school students in rural areas.The findings of this research prove that the advantages of task-based approach in vocabulary teaching are evident:it helps impress the students deeply when they first meet words, and they will remember the word meaning more easily. And the questionnaire investigation shows that most of the students like the tasks in vocabulary learning; they think the activities of doing the task make it much more interesting and easier to remember the word meaning.
