A Study on the Training of Reading Strategies Based on the Genre Analysis At Senior Schools

Reading is quite an important language skill for EFL students. The teaching of reading has long been a key and difficult task for language teachers.The requirement of the reading competence in English of senior high school students has been put forward in the College Entrance Examination and in the newly-published New Curricular Standards as well. It is urgent for teachers and students to know how to cultivate the students’awareness of reading strategies and improve their English reading competence. Theories and researches on the language learning strategies, reading stratgies and genre analysis at home and abroad have provided a new perspective for teaching of English reading.By using both quantitative and qualitative researches in addition to interviews, the present study investigates the use of reading strategies employed by senior high school EFL students. According to the statistics from the investigation, an experimental study has been carried out in Beihong Senior High School in Hongkou District of Shanghai. After two terms’experiment, the subjects’reading capacity has greatly developed and their overall English proficiency has also been greatly improved.This study has reached a conclusion:1. Reading strategies can be trained and enhanced;2. The training of reading strategies with genre analysis is undoubtedly feasible;3. The students can improve their reading competence by employing effective reading strategies and the autonomous learning can be cultivated during the training.The dissertation is composed of six chapters:Chapter One is the introduction to my dissertation; Chapter Two is mainly about the theories used in my dissertation and the literature review; Chapter Three is the genre analysis about the textbooks used in senior schools and the College Entrance Examination Papers; Chapter Four is the investigation of the reading strategies and its analysis; Chapter Five focuses on the experimental study on training the students’reading strategies, the analysis and discussion of the training results; Chapter Six briefly puts forward some ideas about strategies training, and points out the limitations of the study.
