In the modern society, people love traveling, which has gradually become a popular way of recreation and learning. It has been playing an increasingly important role in economy all around the world. As a country with thousands of years’ancient civilization, China is a perfect mixture of vast lands, long history, brilliant civilization, spectacular scenery and multinational culture. The abundant and brilliant culture accumulated through many dynasties displays its irresistible glamour to the world, which are valuable properties for China to develop tourism. Nowadays, more and more foreigners come to China to get a better understanding of this mysterious oriental country, so it is of great significance to make these traditional tourism resources known to foreigners, especially the English-speaking ones. Therefore, the C-E tourism translation studies have become the focus in applied translation studies.Among the C-E tourism translation, the C-E translation of scenic spots names plays a significant role with three reasons as follows. Firstly, scenic spots names are just like people’s names, which can distinguish them from others. Secondly, scenic spots names can reflect the unique local culture, so the accuracy of the C-E translation of scenic spots names directly influences the foreign tourists’understandings of Chinese unique culture. Thirdly, proper translation of scenic spots names can directly attract the overseas potential tourists, for it is scenic spots names that give the potential tourists the first impression when reading tourism brochures, guide books, travel magazines, websites, etc. Therefore, scenic spots names should be informative, attractive and concise in order to arouse the readers’ interest, which may result in the final traveling decision. To meet the needs of foreign tourists, almost all the scenic spots names in the tourism attractions have been translated into English. At the same time, a large amount of material including tourism brochures, guidebooks written in English or English-Chinese has been published to introduce scenic spots and publicize Chinese culture. However, among these materials, there are many translation errors and problems, including multi-versions of the same scenic spot, the misusing of capitalized letter, misspellings, poor choice of words, etc., which not only make the foreign tourists difficult to understand, even mislead the tourists, but also exert a negative influence on the development of tourism, and this situation needs to be improved immediately. Therefore, the author of this thesis takes Hunan Martyr’s Park and the Window of the World in Changsha as a case study with a large number of examples collected from the two tourism attractions to illustrate the situation of the present C-E translation of scenic spots names.Based on translation theories of German Functional Approach, this thesis classifies, analyzes and studies various translation errors and problems of the scenic spots name for Hunan Martyr’s Park and the Window of the World in Changsha. Particularly, by using the theories of Christiane Nord, i.e., Documentary Translation and Instrumental Translation, and that of Hans J Vermeer, i.e., the Skopos Theory, this thesis discusses the translation principles of scenic spots names and suggests concrete translation methods according to the specific type of tourism attractions, such as transliteration, literal translation, transliteration plus literal translation, free translation and adoption of established names.
