"Xueheng" Magazine and "New Humanitas" Theory

Since the 1980s, study on <XueHeng> paid great attention to the influence that American scholar Babbit’s"humanitas" theory had on Chinese scholars related to this magazine. And not rarely, they studied the magazine’s academic tendency in the background of global conservatism. But what we should also pay attention to is that our study on "humanitas" theory was based on the earliest translation, which was published in <Xueheng > by Wumi and Huxiansu and other scholars. That’s to say, people took it for granted that the translation works by early Chinese scholars were exactly what the original works were. But all those translation works had more or less simplified Babbit’s "humanitas" theory to"reason over emotion" or "cultural totalitarianism". At the same time, there were few integral introduction and research of this theory . So after rereading the original work Of Babbit, the author will try to describe the general idea of "humanitas" theory in a comparatively objective way in chapter two of this thesis. And the next problem is: how did the <xueheng> scholars "translate" Babbit’s "humanitas" theory? In Chapter three we will discuss the process of Wumi’s "translating" in a specific way. Through the comparison of the original works and translation works, this thesis will pay special attention to the differences in details, and analyze, differentiate the words which were granted as "corresponding "in bilingual edition, in order to elucidate the process of "translating", while the cultural significance underlying the process is also disclosed. In the last chapter we will analyze the cultural ideal and conservatism tendency of <xueheng>. Then we come to conclusion: <Xueheng> scholars’ insistence on "culture pluralism" and "anti_evolutionism", and their vindication for Chinese traditional culture, had shown their stand that academic work should be independent from politics, humanity field should be different from scientific field. And their ideal, which is ,society reform should be done by individual morality improvement , provided another choice for the revolutionary way of China . This way, being complementary to political reform, can soften the turbulence of society caused by the latter.
