Research on the Performance Assessment Supporting System for IT Course in the Middle School

Within the construction and maturation of the objective and concept, curriculums reforms have been introduced into IT courses within middle schools in China. The criteria of IT courses, which includes objectives, teaching methodologies and ways of evaluation, have undergone significant change. However, according to a survey in Pearl River delta area, big difference exists between of what is proposed to do and what is the status of quo, in terms of the course evaluation and assessment. Teachers do not show crucial understandings on implementing the Process Evaluation and the Performance Assessment. Therefore, the issues, which regarding to developing further advantages in using CAA(Computer-aided Assessment) and implementing effective Performance Assessment, have been raised.The present thesis first conducts, through literature and internet, a survey to find the focus and trend of CAA research, in which the relative CAA programs in favor of the Qualitative Assessment has been given detailed analysis. All these prepare ourselves for a later design and development of the prospective system. Meanwhile, a broad reference to the fruits in the Learning Environment Theory., the Activity Theory, the Qualitative Assessment the tools for Qualitative Assessment provides us with theoretical guidance on the research and development of the system as well. Emphasis has also been put on the process of the Performance Assessment and the role of medium played by the CAA system in the evaluation. Moreover, based on the previous research and theoretical analysis, we develop the framework and functional module of Performance-assessment Supporting System (PASS) for IT course in the middle school. At the same time, UML is applied to modeling and the application of ASP makes the realization of this system possible.At last, combined with the instructional model proposed by ISM, which is used in the teaching with the PASS, we applied the system to the teaching and evaluation of the IT course in 25 classes in No.1 Middle School of Foshan city and No.1 Middle School of Jiangmen city in the last semester in 2004. According to quastionairs and interviews regarding to our system, the result, turned out that the system is effective in the Performance Assessment for both teachers andstudents. The problems in carrying out the Performance Assessment, supervising students’ production and implementing mutual evaluation have been improved.
