Intelligent optimization algorithm is a research hotpot, it is widely used in many different domains, especially in complex problems which are hard to solved, for example, construction optimization, non-linear optimization, machine optimization. Image registration is a fundamental task of image processing, also precondition of image fusion and target recognition.The principle of artificial intelligent that based on animal’s behaviors can be used for the solving of optimization problems via animals’ method, then an architecture of problem solving, which we called fish school method was defined, and a efficient intelligent optimization algorithm based on it was introduced which we called artificial fish swarm algorithm (AFSA), applied AFSA to image registration get a satisfied result.The principle and description of AFSA was described in detail. The convergence property and the influence of parameters to it was discussed, finally, used it to image registration, Adopting AFSA to optimization process of image registration, Mutual Information is used as registration criterion respectively, the paper presents a registration method based on Mutual Information and AFSA. Experiments testified this method has high accuracy and reliability.
