Study on Interfacial Chemical Reactivity of Polystyrene/Carbon Nanotubes Composites

Polymer-carbon nanotube composite materials have attracted much recent attention due to the unique mechanical, electrical and optical properties of carbon nanotubes. In this paper, PS/MWNT composites will be studied in aspects as follows.1 Preparation and characterization of PS/MWNT compositesPS/MWNT composites have been prepared by suspension polymerization. SEM and TEM images show MWNT were wrapped entirely or partially by PS. PS/MWNT composites were characterized by the measurements such as TG-DTA 、 DLS、 FT-IR、 Raman and XPS. According to analytical results and comparison between different dissolvability of composites in toluene by mixing and suspension polymerization respectively, we came to the conclusion that some MWNT could take part in the polymerization of PS and were chemically C-C bound to PS during the suspension polymerization of PS/MWNT, the resulted MWNT were wrapped entirely or partially by PS, and good solubility of PS/MWNT composites in toluene has been obtained.2 Study on interaction between MWNT and BPOInteraction between MWNT and BPO has been characterized by FT-IR and TGA. FT-IR analysis show that there is no chemical reaction between MWNT and BPO at room temperature, and BPO can react with MWNT at 60—80℃. TGA suggest that an increase in amount of BPO and reaction time benefits the chemical reaction between MWNT and BPO, which resulted more radicals bound to MWNT and weight loss.3 Effect of MWNT on molecular weight of PSPS/MWNT composites with different added amount of MWNT and pure PS have been prepared, results of solubility 、 yield and molecular weight of PS are obtained. Effect of MWNT on molecular weight of PS are studied according to analyses and comparisons.
